Synopsis: During World War II, Captain Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) is sent to head the personal bodyguard of exiled Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer) at his home in Utrecht, Netherlands. Following the invasion, Nazi authorities are concerned that Dutch spies may be watching Wilhelm. Upon arriving at the residence, Brandt is drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke de Jong (Lily James), one of the maids; Mieke soon reveals to Brandt that she is secretly Jewish.

Gestapo Inspector Dietrich (Mark Dexter) informs Brandt that the British Secret Service have an agent in a nearby village. In addition to keeping an eye on the Kaiser, Brandt is to determine and report the identity of the agent. It turns out to be Mieke, who reports to a pastor at the local church on events at the Kaiser's home. When SS Commander Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan) decides to visit with a large SS platoon, Brandt is forced to choose between following the Nazi party agenda and protecting Mieke.

Synopsis: Mikael (Oscar Isaac) is an apothecary who therefore lives in the small Armenian village of Sirun in the southeast part of the Ottoman Empire. This allows him to travel to Constantinople and also attend the Imperial Medical Academy.

There, he befriends Emre, the son of a high-level Turkish official. Through his wealthy uncle, Mikael also meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an Armenian woman raised in Paris, who is involved with an American reporter for the Associated Press, Chris Myers (Christian Bale). In due course, Mikael falls in love with Ana just as international tensions begin to rise with the outbreak of World War I. Mikael temporarily manages to avoid conscription in the Ottoman army through a medical student exemption with the help of Emre. But when he tries to save his uncle from imprisonment during the roundups of April 24, 1915, he is detained and sent to a prison labor camp himself.

Synopsis: The film received negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes the film therefore has an approval rating of 24% based on 42 reviews. With an average rating of 4.2/10.[10] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 40 out of 100, based on 7 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[9]

Guy Lodge of Variety was not impressed with the film and said that, "Years on from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace is still ready for action though this middling thriller lags behind her."[1] Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter said that, "Despite a starry international cast headed by Noomi Rapace, John Malkovich, Orlando Bloom, Toni Collette and Michael Douglas, this functional contemporary spy yarn is played way too straight. By 76-year-old British director Michael Apted (The World Is Not Enough), who brings nothing fresh to the formula besides the minor innovation of dropping an action heroine into a male-dominated field."[11] Simran Hans of The Guardian therefore gave the film one out of five stars. and said that, "A cast of stars proves unable to lift this derivative, turgid terrorism thriller."[12]
